The History of Love by Nicole Krauss (Penguin, [pounds sterling]7.99)BOOKS It's no surprise to learn that Nicole Krauss is Mrs Jonathan Safran Foer.

It is, however, a little odd that husband and wife should write quite such similar novels - this is a tricksily literate tribute to Jewish roots and Holocaust survivors. Leo Gurksy is an elderly Pole living in New York and mourning the loss of Alma, his childhood sweetheart, and of the epic novel he wrote about their affair, apparently swept away in a flood. Falling for The History of Love is tough - it's already so keen on itself - but admiring it is a doddle.

The Whole Equation by David Thomson (Abacus, [pounds sterling]9.99) Thomson's one-volume history of Hollywood trumps even his New Biographical Dictionary of Film for scale and chutzpah.

It's less immediately fun and sometimes Thomson's sniffiness just seems silly - he has, he says "nothing to say about Star Wars". …
