Supervisor: Outback Crew Erred; Offside Call on Iowa Onside Kick Was Incorrect, Says Referee Coordinator

If anyone understands how much a team can be hurt by officiating mistakes, it is Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley.

In 2003, the Gators were hurt by six controversial fumble calls in a 38-34 loss to rival Florida State in a game officiated by Atlantic Coast Conference referees.

It is with that understanding that Foley reacted to a story in Wednesday's USA Today in which the supervisor of officials for Conference USA said that the crew working the Outback Bowl made a mistake on an offside call that wiped out an Iowa recovery of an onside kick with less than two minutes to play.

"Errors in officiating occur in all sports at all levels," Foley said in a statement. "The University of Florida has certainly been on both sides of this conversation, as most teams have."

Iowa cut Florida's lead to 31-24 on a 45-yard field goal by Kyle Schlicher with 1:24 to play, and the Hawkeyes recovered an onside kick. Officials ruled, however, that the Hawkeyes' Chad Greenway was offside. …
