Carlisle United made their second new signing of the transfer window yesterday, but player-manager Paul Simpson admits the area he would most like to improve will have to wait until the summer.

Mark Rivers has joined until the end of the season from Crewe Alexandra and will be eligible to make his debut in tonight's LDV Vans Trophy northern semi-final against Kidderminster Harriers.

While Simpson is delighted to be a game away from the northern final, he admits he would rather the tie was played at Aggborough. "We've taken this competition seriously all the way through, although we've not taken any risks with players," Simpson said. "It's a competition which is valuable to clubs at this level.

"The only problem we have is the effect on the pitch."

Carlisle are hoping to make do and mend with the Brunton Park playing surface until the end of the season.

"We've returfed both goalmouths and one part of the pitch which was in a particularly bad way but the long-term view is that it's going to be ripped up in the summer and we'll be spending a lot of money on that," Simpson admitted. …
