Article excerpt

There will be smiling faces aplenty in Teesside as the region's first happiness club gets up and running.

Marie Turbill met club founder Lesley Broadhead and picked up a few smile-inducing tips to share.

COULD Teesside be the happiest place in the UK?

Well if Lesley Broadhead got her way it would be. The psychotherapist is setting up a happiness club.

Teessiders are invited to come along and learn some techniques for beating the blues.

"The world that we live in can, at times, be a very stressful place," she says.

"The images we get bombarded with can be very negative. Anything that helps us focus on something brighter and more positive has got to be good."

Lesley says: "There are a lot of positive things out there yet we tend to focus on the negative. Quite often it seems we have a default mechanism that defaults back into doom and gloom."

Lesley, a mum-of-two, from Stockton, says she has always been fascinated by the workings of the mind and how it connects with the body.

She has done a degree in health and psychology, a postgraduate in family therapy and has worked in health and social care for 16 years.

"I went on to work in child protection, working with people experiencing various problems such as domestic violence, mental health problems and disabilities," she says.

Lesley, 47, also worked with young offenders and then victims of sexual abuse and their families.

"I ran groups for mothers whose children had been sexually abused," she says. "I found that I loved working with people and being able to help them and move them on with their lives."

Lesley started looking at new psychology techniques and trained in neuro-linguistic programming, hypnotherapy and energy medicine.

After spending a short time living in Spain, Lesley and her family decided to settle in Teesside.

It is here that she decided to put all of her happiness skills to good use and started working towards setting up a group. …
