YOU don't go to a Valentino show for surprises.

While John Galliano likes to shock and Karl Lagerfeld likes to experiment, Valentino quietly gets on with designing elegant clothes.

Like his fellow Italian, Giorgio Armani, Valentino knows what his customers want, and gives it to them straight. Well, with a few frills thrown in for good measure.

Pity the poor couture client who might be feeling a little overweight after Christmas. For in the words of Valentino, this latest collection was "for a woman as light as a grain of sand".

Certainly you would have to be on the minuscule side to wear it: skin-tight, slinky jersey and clinging bodices made of draped chiffon featured on almost every dress.

Colours were pale and delicate: oyster, blush pink and faded lilac featured alongside virginal white. All of Valentino's signatures were here: the polka dot prints, the wide-lapel coats, the ruffled column gowns and nary a pair of trousers to be seen. …
