A convoy of crimefighters was dispatched in Stockton in a massive blitz against criminal damage.

Police, firefighters and Stockton Council's enforcement team took to the streets of north Stockton yesterday in Operation Clean Sweep, launched by the Safer Stockton Partnership.

The teams moved into hotspot areas around the town's Dundas Street, Appleton Road and Eastbourne Road to remove graffiti and clear away litter and fly tipping.

Extra foot patrols backed up the operation and the police and enforcement team issued fixed penalty notices for offences.

Criminal damage accounts for a staggering 30pc of all reported crime in the Stockton area, and Clean Sweep was the start of an ongoing blitz across the borough aiming to restore neighbourhood pride and bring offenders to justice.

Chief Inspector Gary Gamesby said: "We want to show residents in this area that they do not have to put up with damage to their properties and that littering and graffiti are unacceptable. …
