An affordable playgroup is the latest venture from a women's centre fighting to keep its funding head above water.

The South Bank Women's Centre on Upper Albion Street was close to folding last February after its money nearly dried up.

The centre, with 700 women on its books but no substantial cash from the council, education and health authorities, relies on grants for its annual pounds 200,000 running costs. In April, we revealed funding had been secured until Christmas 2005. And now, after another round of grant applications, the centre's future look secure until at least the autumn.

It means training, advice and information services at the centre can continue to be provided and enhanced. That's despite uncertainty about the future of the building itself, given the proposed regeneration of South Bank.

New developments include a snack bar run by volunteers and a low-fee playgroup.
