Machaba Balu Preserve, a 10,000-acre network of marshes and islands within Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, will be officially opened at a ceremony Sunday, Feb. 19 at Sisters Creek Marina.

The free event, hosted by The Nature Conservancy, runs from noon to 4 p.m. and is open to the public. Activities include a dedication ceremony, free boat tours and music. Concessions will be available.

The preserve, whose name is Timucuan for "saved or preserved marsh," supports a number of rare plants and animals and features 77 small islands and hammocks.

SKIPPER CLAIMS A SECOND

Jacksonville's Tom Slade skippered Renegade, a 52-foot Santa Cruz, to a second-place finish in class in the 31st annual Lauderdale-Key West race for sailboats.

The 160-mile race began at 1 p.m. Wednesday, with the fastest boats finishing Thursday morning. Slade's boat finished with an elapsed time of 21 hours, 58 minutes, 8 seconds to take second place in the PHRF B Class.

The overall PHRF winner of the race was the Sea Turtle, a Beneteau 38 captained by Jim Miller of Melbourne.

COUNCIL HAS OPENINGS

The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council has several Florida openings on its advisory panels that help shape the future of fisheries.

On the King and Spanish Mackerel Advisory panel, one charter/for hire seat and one recreational seat are available. Two commercial seats and one commercial/diver seat are open on the Snapper Grouper Advisory Panel.

The council uses its 15 panels for input and guidance in making management decisions. The panels are composed of recreational, commercial and charter anglers and others who are knowledgeable and interested in the conservation and management of specific fisheries.

Panel members are appointed to three-year terms and can reapply for their positions when terms expire. …
