Foolish Not to Work with the Assembly

To some, it's a boring, invisible, waste of money. To others, an insult to a clear majority in the North-East who voted to reject it, or something very like it, so emphatically.

There are also those who fear it's a Trojan horse for a Brussels parliament which, they believe, is happy to trample on democratic rights if it allows its leaders to advance their cause of a Europe of the regions.

And even its new boss is clearly prepared to contemplate finding it a new name.

But whatever one calls the North East Assembly, and regardless of whether one likes it or not, there's no denying the power it wields in our region.

This, remember, is the body tasked with scrutinising the vital work of the development agency, One NorthEast.

Furthermore, the regional strategies it draws up covering areas like transport and planning will have an impact for years to come.

The plan it is finalising for release next month, for example, considers the location of factories, homes, offices and more. …
