Glenn Roeder today spoke of his biggest challenge in football management after being handed the reins of Newcastle United as caretaker boss.

Roeder was training with the first-team squad this morning for the first time and was assisted by Alan Shearer and Terry McDermott in the aftermath of Graeme Souness' departure, along with coaches Alan Murray, Dean Saunders and Roy Tunks.

Roeder (pictured below) has had little time to prepare for the visit of Portsmouth tomorrow, but was looking forward to the challenge.

He said: "I've been asked to stand in as caretaker, which always happens in this situation when a manager loses his job.

"From the staff that was left I would admit I was the best person to ask.

"I've had two years in the Premiership with West Ham and two-and-a-half years working with England along with Glenn Hoddle.

"We worked with Alan Shearer at France `98 also, and I have worked with high profile players before ( I enjoy it. …
