A pounds 1m wind turbine planned at Boro's Riverside Stadium could pay for itself within four years as the club declared "We are not smoggies any more".

Plans for the eco-friendly turbine at the Riverside Stadium could net them pounds 250,000 a year.

Boro's electrical consultant of 20 years, Les Catchpole, said surplus energy produced by the structure could be sold back to the national grid.

"The cost is the capital cost of buying the turbine and setting it up. After that it's free because obviously it is powered by the wind," he said.

"It should pay itself off in about four years. After about four years we could be making quarter of a million pound a year."

Mr Catchpole also revealed the structure could be up and running in 18 months once all consultations are finished and providing a planning application is approved.

And he is excited by the thought of making Middlesbrough's "Smoggies" tag seem a little ironic. …
