Chance for Boro to Climb the Table

Article excerpt

Byline: Rugby Preview Andrew Wilkinson

Middlesbrough have some crucial games coming up which give them the opportunity to climb well away from relegation trouble - starting tomorrow.

They visit second-from-bottom Caldy, who they have yet to play this season. They also face two games against Longton, who are also below them in North Division One.

But fourth-from-bottom Boro, who have slipped into trouble after a run of defeats that followed a solid start to the season, know that the time to start winning is now.

Caldy have won only twice this season, and have struggled to score many points in games, hence a points difference of minus 221.

Boro have played much better in their last two games, though both have ended in narrow defeats.

However if they hit the same standards again tomorrow it should be enough, while even a marginal improvement would almost certainly sentence Caldy to a 12th defeat of the season.

Boro had to make a few late changes last week, and are hoping to avoid similar disruption this time. They have named the same backs which means that Danny Poole retains his place on the wing.

In the forwards, Mark Kerruish returns to the back row, while Richard Barker will be on the bench.

Skipper Ian Bradford, who had to pull out of last week's match at short notice, returns to the back row.

In the day's only other league game, Guisborough host Sunderland in Durham and North 2.

And it's a huge test for the home side, as Sunderland are top, having won all 12 games so far, while Guisborough have won six of their 14.

Middlesbrough (at Caldy, 8.45, 2.15): Moore, Gyasi, Micklewright, D Richardson, Poole, Baggett, Goodall, Pattinson, Kerruish, Fingland, Palesci, Bradford, Chapman, R Horton, Adamson. Reps: Barker, C Horton, L Richardson.
