Shola Ameobi today revealed his joy after playing a huge part in Alan Shearer's record breaking goal at St James' Park, (writes Lee Ryder).

Ameobi, who returned from a hip injury against Portsmouth, linked up well with United's No 9 and back-heeled the ball into his path to enable him to fire home goal No 201.

Ameobi said: "It's great to be a part of history, because there's no doubt this is a massive achievement. That was a trademark Alan Shearer finish. As soon as I backheeled it into Alan's path, I knew that was a goal.

"In the first half I was trying to set him up as well. I desperately wanted him to achieve that. We've had a torrid time this season as a club and it's just fitting that Alan sealed the game with his record goal.

"What an ovation he got ( and rightly so! The fans and the players know what a massive asset be's been to the club, and he deserves all the plaudits he gets. …
