England travel to India this weekend with a spin attack boasting a paltry three caps and three Test wickets between them.

Ashley Giles' troublesome hip, which prevents him getting on the plane to Mumbai with Durham's Paul Collingwood, Steve Harmison and Liam Plunkett and the rest of the squad on Sunday, means untried duo Ian Blackwell and Monty Panesar join 36-year-old Shaun Udal in the 16-man party.

A slower than anticipated recovery from surgery by Giles promoted Blackwell, who was placed on standby a fortnight ago.

Although Warwickshire's Giles has not been ruled out of the entire nine-week tour, time is running out ahead of three back-to-back Tests, which begin in Nagpur three weeks today.

Statistics alone do not emphasise how the 32-year-old will be missed.

Despite averaging only two wickets per Test in his last 14 appearances, he remains an integral part of the side, strengthening the lower order with his batting ability and providing a safe pair of hands in the gully. …
