Postcards from no man's land

Aidan Chambers

Red Fox pounds 5.99

These are two brilliant and heart-tugging stories wrapped up in one. One is the story of Jacob Todd who goes to visit his grandfather's grave in Amsterdam as part of the Battle of Arnhem commemorations. The other slips back 50 years in time to tell the story of another Jacob Todd, a wounded Second World War soldier and his love for a young Dutch girl. Both stories are so well-written and so cleverly interwoven you almost feel you are there and really care about what happens to the characters. It's a book to come back to again and again, which will make you think and make you cry. Definitely not an easy read but one which is well worthwhile.
