NAVY EMBASSY REPS MEETING AT MAYPORT

Navy representatives from U.S. embassies in 14 Caribbean, Central and South American countries are meeting this week at Mayport Naval Station to coordinate the Navy's plan for the region, the U.S. Southern Command said.

The representatives are Navy section chiefs within the military group at embassies. The groups consist of members from all the armed services around the world, and manage all security assistance programs to their host country. Those programs consist of military sales of hardware and other goods, military education and training for U.S. and foreign troops, the transfer of excess U.S. military materiel, financing for foreign militaries, and security cooperation activities.

The section chiefs are from U.S. embassies in: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Trinidad and Tobago. The meeting is sponsored by the Mayport-based naval component of the Miami-based Southern Command, which is responsible for the 32 nations in Central and South America and in the Caribbean Sea.
