WARM-UP act Alan Carr was right when he jokingly remarked: "Supporting Roseanne Barr in Leicester?

Am I the only one who thinks there's been some mistake?"

The impressively ambitious Leicester Comedy Festival scored a genuine triumph by securing the feisty sitcom legend for her only European gigs, but beyond the scoop there was little to smile about.

Rarely has a major performer delivered lines in such robotic fashion. If Roseanne was not reading from an autocue she certainly did a convincing impression of someone encountering the hour's worth of part-satirical material for the first time. Some early stumbles hinted at nerves, while a later gag died due to the good East Midlands folk not having the foggiest who brimstone preacher Pat Robertson was.

If the reductive politics - basically saying we are hurtling towards Bush-inspired Armageddon so we might as well laugh - struggled to hit its stride, at least the star found common ground in nailing the way generations repeat each other. …
