Sparkling Form Means Hammers Can Outshine Jewell and Secure Safety

ALAN PARDEW is looking for his buoyant West Ham team to pass a milestone tonight and overtake Paul Jewell's Wigan in the process, writes Ken Dyer.

A victory over struggling Birmingham at Upton Park would make it seven successive wins for Pardew's side, pushing them up to sixth place in the Premiership and past the 40-point mark to virtual safety.

"We want to be the first of the promoted clubs to reach 40 points and we have that opportunity after Wigan's defeat by Liverpool," said Pardew today.

"If we manage that tonight, it's one hell of an achievement for a club who came through the playoffs and entered the transfer market later than its rivals.

"That's a great target for us, an immediate target. Let's forget about everything else for the moment and go for that one."

West Ham are currently in their best run of form since 1985 when John Lyall's team won nine successive League games and there has been talk linking some of their brightest young players with possible moves. …
