Cost of OakLeaf School Is Up More Than $1 Million to $16.1 Million; Work Related to 34 More Portable Classrooms Was Added to the Bill

The cost of the kindergarten to eighth-grade school being built for OakLeaf has increased by more than $1 million.

Site preparation and utility connections for 34 more portable classrooms were added to the bill, as were bus loop modifications made necessary by the extra classrooms.

That brings the total cost of the school to $16.1 million and the total number of portable classrooms planned for the school to 54. The portable classrooms were already purchased.

On Jan. 20, the Clay County School Board unanimously approved a change order allowing the project's construction manager, the Barton-Malow Co., to do the work.

Board member Wayne Bolla questioned why district officials did not include the larger number of portable classrooms in the initial plans for the school and in Barton-Malow's initial contract.

But Jim Connell, district facilities coordinator, said they did not anticipate OakLeaf's rapid growth when the plans and contract were being developed. …
