Buyers Are Spoiled for Choice at Luing Sale

Buyers were spoiled for choice at the Annual Luing Sale at Wallets Marts, Castle Douglas, on Friday with a 50% increase on the year and more heifers to select from since the early 1970s.

Many breeders declared the offering to be the best they had ever seen and bidding was fast and furious for the top lots.

There was a total clearance of females with 178 bulling heifers averaging pounds 858. This was down pounds 170 for 112 sold last year and pounds 10 less than the average for 138 sold in 2004.

Top price was 2,000gns paid for each of a pen of three dark roan, April 2004 born Monzie Tartan Terror daughters from Bob Moffat, Wooplaw, Galashiels. Wooplaw Fern 4th, Fern 10th and Fern 17th were bid for by John Buglass who took 20 home to join Ian Wotherspoon's Glen Lyon herd near Aberfeldy.

A further two Tartan Terror daughters were taken at 1,900gns by Neil Anderson for Prof Penny at Harehead, Duns. The 17 Wooplaw heifers levelled at an average of pounds 1,417. …
