Motorists will be offered free or discounted soft drinks as part of a designated-driver scheme at a city leisure complex.

Bars and restaurants at the Gate in Newcastle are making the offer to drivers, who will be expected to hand over their car keys to be locked away or produce a car parking ticket, in conjunction with the police.

Nouvelle cuisine

A pounds 300,000 cafe-style kitchen and dining room was officially opened at St Gregory's RC Primary School in South Shields yesterday.

The rooms, which replace a block nearly 60 years old, were opened by South Tyneside Mayor Bill Lynch and school cook Carol Giles.

Scarecrow days

SCARECROW making and wool spinning are among the activities on offer at Bede's World in Jarrow over half term.

Visitors can create their own mini scarecrow from February 20 to 24. On the weekends of February 18 and 25, they can discover how wool was spun in Bede's time.
