Teesside bowling tyro Liam Plunkett is expected to play in England's opening match of the tour of India in Mumbai tomorrow.

Coach Duncan Fletcher plans to use all 16 tourists - fitness permitting - including the 20-year-old Durham seamer, in the three-day practice match at the Brabourne Stadium.

Fletcher operated a similar policy in Pakistan before Christmas, allowing the untried Plunkett to gain valuable bowling experience on the flat, dry tracks of the Subcontinent, which stood him in good stead when he made his debut in the third Test.

England batsman Andrew Strauss, meanwhile, has warned India not to underestimate the tourists' spinners.

While England's main threat is expected to come from their four-pronged pace attack, Strauss advises against ignoring slow bowlers Shaun Udal, Ian Blackwell and Monty Panesar when the three-match series gets under way.

They have only three caps and three wickets between them in Tests - all taken by Udal on the difficult tour of Pakistan - and have therefore been a source of some amusement in India, a country that reveres spinners. …
