Manchester City boss Stuart Pearce praised rookie defender Micah Richards after he grabbed an injury-time equaliser in the FA Cup fifth round clash at Aston Villa, writes John Curtis.

Birmingham-born Richards was starting only his second senior game but in the dying seconds the 17-year-old headed home a corner from Joey Barton to earn a replay for Pearce's side.

Richards' effort was no more than City deserved after dominating for long periods and squandering several chances before Milan Baros gave the home side a 72nd-minute lead against the run of play.

Pearce said: "Micah is an honest lad. He works very hard and he deserves to have broken into our first team. Like many of the young kids here, if they play well enough in the reserves, they will get their chance and he has joined that band of people.

"He has been our best player in the reserves for the past six months and we are very proud of him. We hope he is going to be here for a number of years to come. …
