Monkeys Are Just Warming Up; POP

POOR Maximo Park. For all the delights of their A Certain Trigger album, and for all the flamboyant showmanship of singer Paul Smith, not to mention the twirling keyboards of Lukas Wooller and the hummability of such songs as Apply Some Pressure and Postcard of a Painting, the peculiar dynamics of the closing night of the NME Awards Tour on Friday meant they were saddled with following Arctic Monkeys.

Still, at least there were fewer people in the Academy to note that Smith's opening gambit "We're Maximo Park and this is what we do" was cribbed from REM's Michael Stipe. Their time may yet come, and Smith was a hypnotising figure, but other than swallowing pride and slipping down the bill, their position was untenable.

Arctic Monkeys, though, are a phenomenon happening before our very eyes.

They get things right: even their introductory music (Warren G's peerless Regulate) was perfect. …
