Bungalow Is Killing off Our Garden

A green-fingered dad has blasted housing developers for ruining his treasured garden.

Peter O'Reilly, 49, was forced to give up his job as a glazier 11 years ago due to ill health. Since then, gardening has been one of the few activities he is physically able to do.

But the diabetic dad-of-three claims that a new neighbouring bungalow, built as part of the pounds 50m Acklam Green housing redevelopment, has put a stop to his hobby.

He says it is so big it blocks out sunlight to his garden, and is killing plants outside his home on School Avenue, Whinney Banks.

He told the Gazette: "I loved getting out in the garden, especially in the summer. I would do as much as I could, but the plants just can't survive without the sunlight.

"The garden is pure clay now and it's impossible to grow anything out there."

His wife Susan, 50, said that the plans the couple were shown during a public consultation period "played down" the size of the bungalow, which they estimate to be about 20ft high. …
