THANKS to Standard readers, the chances of getting nicked for speeding over Tower Bridge are now slightly fairer. In November we revealed that nearly 300 motorists a week were being caught on camera.

Many contacted us to say they did not know it was a 20mph limit because the cameras were tucked out of sight, there were no telltale white lines on the road and signs advertising the limit were not up to the job.

Last week City of London police reacted to the criticism by painting big new signs on the road surface in a bid to get the message across. We reckon it's better but it's still a trap for the unwary, as all surrounding roads have 30mph limits.

The other problem is that you are normally forced to crawl across at a walking pace - it's such a relief to find it free of traffic in the evenings that motorists tend to drive across at around 30mph, landing themselves with a [pounds sterling]60 fine and three points on their licence. …
