U.S., Behind Roddick's Win, Advances to Davis Cup Quarterfinals

Andy Roddick beat Romania's Razvan Sabau in straight sets Sunday in San Diego to send the United States into the Davis Cup quarterfinals.

"I was just trying to maintain energy and keep on an even keel out there today," Roddick said

The victory gave the Americans an insurmountable 3-1 lead in the best-of-five opening round, then James Blake made the final 4-1 with his closing singles victory.

Blake and the doubles team of Mike and Bob Bryan provided the first two U.S. victories, then Blake capped the round with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Horia Tecau in what essentially was an exhibition match shortened to two sets.

The United States advanced to play Chile, which beat Slovakia in the first round.

AROUND TENNIS

Australian Open champion Amelie Mauresmo won her second consecutive title of 2006, defeating Mary Pierce 6-1, 7-6 (2) in an all-French final at the Gaz de France in Paris. . . . Israeli teenager Shahar Peer won her first WTA title with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jelena Kostanic in a final at the Pattaya (Thailand) Women's Open that was interrupted for 11/2 hours because of rain.

HATTEBERG SIGNS WITH REDS

Scott Hatteberg agreed to a one-year, $750,000 contract with Cincinnati, giving the Reds more flexibility at first base.

Hatteberg batted .256 with seven homers and 59 RBI last season for Oakland, which declined his contract option for 2006. The Athletics decided to stick with Dan Johnson at first base.

Hatteberg can make an additional $250,000 in performance bonuses, based upon plate appearances.

"We wanted to add to our depth," Cincinnati general manager Wayne Krivsky said by phone.

RACQUETBALL PLAYERS WIN IN STATE TOURNAMENT
