TWO convicts on day release were picked up from their prison gates to take part in an armed raid on a jeweller's shop.

Photographs of the robbery were issued by police today as a four-man gang began a total of 33 years in jail.

In the raid on the Richmond store, CCTV images show a robber in a crash helmet threatening staff. The gang burst into the Ernest Jones shop in George Street and stole Rolex watches worth [pounds sterling]120,000 from a display cabinet.

But armed officers from the Flying Squad were waiting for them. Today it emerged that two of the group - Delroy Roberts and Matthew Elderfield, both 30 - were picked up outside Spring Hill prison near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire when they were released for a day last April.

Gang member Adam Macauley, 26, drove them to garages in Old Windsor where they met 29-year-old Michael Priestley. There, the two prisoners were provided with clothing, a firearm and a stolen Ducati motorbike. …
