Boateng Boosts Holland Chances

George Boateng's World Cup hopes received a major boost last night as he started for Holland.

The Boro midfielder played an hour of the Dutch side's 1-0 friendly win over Ecuador in Amsterdam.

Boateng lined up in a three-man engine room alongside Mark Van Bommel and Philip Cocu.

And although the game only sparked into life after the break, Boateng will feel he has done his prospects of going to Germany no harm.

The 30-year-old got through his usual tireless shift before making way for Feyenoord debutant Nicky Hofs on 61 minutes. Dirk Kuijt grabbed the only goal of the game from close range.

Holland coach Marco van Basten refused to praise individual players, but paid tribute to his side for sticking to their gameplan.

"Despite the fact we didn't play well in the first half we kept our discipline and played the tactics we had planned," he said.

"We hardly created any chances but also gave nothing away. …
