Around the Bend; Scout's Project Renovates Family Room at Hospice

The family room at Mandarin's Earl B. Hadlow Center for Caring at Community Hospice of Northeast Florida is more family friendly these days thanks to a 14-year-old Boy Scout.

Eagle Scout candidate Mack Butikis, with Troop 474, devoted 50 hours of his time to renovate the family room at the facility at 4266 Sunbeam Road, raising $500 to buy toys, games, movies, books, a videocassette/DVD player and a bookcase that he and other volunteers stained to match the rest of the furniture in the room. Butikis has been a familiar face at the Hadlow Center, visiting there many times because his mother Barbara is a hospice nurse, and he wanted his Eagle Scout project to benefit the patients and families there.

Hospice was established in 1979, and provides end of life care to almost 1,000 patients daily in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties with its 700 employees and 1,100 volunteers. The nonprofit organization serves patients at home, in long-term care facilities, hospitals and its two in-patient facilities in Jacksonville. …
