The Weather Man is a finely-crafted character study of father-of-two Dave Spritz, desperate to be respected by those he loves, even though he doesn't respect or even like himself very much.

Traipsing morosely from one disaster to the next, like a condemned man bound for the gallows, he's a warped reflection of the insecurities which afflict us all.

Screenwriter Steven Conrad beautifully engineers subtle shifts between black humour and pathos, drawing us into this man's life.

He demonstrates an acute understanding of the painful complexities of human nature: our reluctance to change; an inability to listen to criticism and learn from it; our innate knack for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.

Nicolas Cage plays the lead with an air of weariness and resignation both pitiful and oddly endearing. Supporting roles, especially from the youngsters, are well-judged, complemented by another scenery-chewing turn from Michael Caine as a literary titan heading at breakneck speed for the grave. …
