Question of the week over at Coronation Street. Ken, looking exasperated at daughter Tracy's latest example of bad behaviour, turns to Deirdre and asks: "Where did we go wrong?"

Goodness gracious, where on earth do we start with this one?

The multiple affairs both parents have indulged in over the years? Deirdre's spell in the slammer? Ken's other daughter having a child with Mike Baldwin, one of Deirdre's past conquests? The fact that Ken has sported the same hairdo for more than 40 years?

Or maybe it might have something to do with Tracy being kept in her bedroom between 1987 and 1994 apparently listening to her tapes. Who knows?

She might not be in line for any Mum of the Year awards, but Tracy didn't exactly learn her parenting skills from the best in the business.

N ONE of the reasons why The Office was such a hit was because we all know a David Brent. Some jumped-up middle-management fool who likes nothing better than "thinking outside the box", being kept "in the loop", "touching base", and "blue sky-ing it." Fact.

5pm isn't hometime now. It's "close of play". People aren't asked for ideas anymore. Rather what they "can bring to the table". And problems which are easily solved are no longer just that. They are "low hanging fruit".

This sort of pretentious waffle is alive and kicking right across the country.

Which is why it can't have been too difficult for the makers of BBC2's brilliant Apprentice to find this year's unwittingly ridiculous contestants. Each of them is trying to out-jargon the rest.

"There are lots of variables we are playing around with within the framework," said Mani. Pardon me?

The two teams were tasked to create a calendar in order to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital, of which Sir Alan Sugar is a "major benefactor". We were reminded of this throughout the show. Does a lot of work for charity, absolutely loves to shout it from the rooftops kind of territory. …
