Some are called Foundation Units while others are better known as nursery and reception classes.

Here three-year-olds have access to five free two-and-a-half hour sessions funded through the Nursery Education Grant.

Some places can take children on the day of their third birthday, while others have termly intakes.

Some day nurseries and playgroups are also funded to provide free nursery education for three-year-olds. To find out what is available in your area call your local Children Information Service - your health visitor will have the contact details.

The sessions within Foundation Units are mainly based around play, and give children a rich, structured environment in which they can explore and learn.

They are an excellent way of preparing children for the more formal setting of the classroom. Most are staffed by qualified teachers and follow a set curriculum. Nursery education can be an excellent way for children to meet new friends, socialise and communicate. …
