Liam Lawrence was left to rue the fact that Sunderland were not able to give Kevin Ball a winning start as caretaker manager, but was satisfied the team had given maximum effort in the 1-0 defeat to Wigan Athletic.

"It's not the best of starts for the new manager but we did give our all for him as we did for the previous manager," he said. "The result is a killer again and only a wonder goal has beaten us. It's frustrating we didn't draw. We should have won it.

"In the first half the lads were tremendous. Their keeper (John Filan) made a couple of wonderful saves to keep them 1-0 in front. We tried to keep going but lost 1-0 ( unlucky."

Wigan have effected a 40-point swing since being promoted from the Championship as the second-placed side behind Sunderland last season.

Lawrence said: "We won the league and were flying and a few months later look where the two sides are. It's ridiculous."

It was the second time this season Sunderland have been beaten 1-0 by the Latics, and the 24-year-old feels the Black Cats were unfortunate both times. …
