Alexander Wins 500th as JU Rolls to Victory

Jacksonville University (10-3) used a strong offensive attack and a great start from Matt Dobbins to defeat Western Michigan (3-3) 10-4 at Brest Field on Thursday night, giving Dolphins coach Terry Alexander his 500th career win.

"It means a lot to me because I've won all of these games at one school," Alexander said. "It's also a tribute to all the guys I've coached over the years who have won these games. To be able to win 500 games in my hometown with my family and friends so close is really special."

The Jacksonville offense accounted for 12 hits, with Mike McCallister doing the most damage. McCallister went 2 for 4 with three RBI (on a three-run home run) and two runs scored.

JAPANESE SQUAD DEFEATS UNF IN BASEBALL EXHIBITION

Four-time All-Japan University champion Aoyama Gakuin defeated the University of North Florida 9-3 in an exhibition baseball game at Harmon Stadium on Thursday night.

Tsuburaya Hidetoshi and Tamamine Yusuke paced Aoyama Gakuin with three hits apiece. Yokohawa Kohdai led the team with four RBI.

The Ospreys were led by junior right fielder Jon Dandridge. Dandridge had a pair of hits, including a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Dandridge and senior catcher Jonathan Hodach each drove in a run for UNF.

AROUND TENNIS

Top-seeded Roger Federer moved into the semifinals of the Dubai (United Arab Emirates) Open with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Robin Vik on Thursday. Second-seeded Rafael Nadal also advanced after ending wildcard Tim Henman's run with a 7-6 (1), 6-1 victory. . . . Second-seeded Gaston Gaudio of Argentina outlasted Marcos Daniel of Brazil 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 to reach the semifinals of the (Acapulco) Mexican Open. Luis Horna also reached the semis, defeating Agustin Calleri 6-3, 6-4. In women's play, top-seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta beat Spaniard Maria Jose Martinez 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-0 to advance to the final four on the clay courts of the Fairmont Acapulco Princess. …
