The Government tried to calm fears of a gas emergency, after unprecedented warnings that demand was outstripping supply.

Trade and Industry Secretary Alan Johnson was forced to make a Commons statement, saying that the situation had "eased" with demand falling to near seasonal norms.

Boots changed

RETAILER Boots put more than 2,000 jobs at risk by unveiling plans to spend pounds 70m on a new automated warehouse operation.

The creation of a state-of-the-art facility at its Nottingham headquarters will eliminate the need for 17 regional warehouses, which will be replaced by a similar number of smaller lorry-docking facilities.

Agency upbeat

COUNTRYWIDE remained upbeat over signs that the housing market was picking up, despite reporting a 21% slump in annual profits.

The group said its estate agency business, which is the biggest in the UK, had experienced a "significant turnaround in profitability" during the second half of the year after a difficult start to 2005. …
