Waycross Supports Ware on Authority; the County Wants More Control of the Satilla Water and Sewer Board

The Waycross City Commission has passed a resolution supporting the Ware County Commission's effort to regain control of appointments to the Satilla Regional Water and Sewer Authority.

Last week the County Commission asked its legislative delegation to give it authority to directly appoint the five members of the authority and make the executive director a county employee. Currently the authority nominates its own members for the County Commission to approve and Executive Director Derrell McDaniel works for the authority.

City Manager Pete Pyrzenski said the change is necessary to restore a spirit of cooperation between the authority and city, which owns the only wastewater treatment plant in the county.

Pyrzenski said Satilla has allowed customers outside the city limits to tap into the city's sewer lines without first informing the city.

The city has "been hitting a rock wall" in its efforts to resolve the issue, Pyrzenski said. …
