Hugh Decides It's Time to Get Cheeky

While Kingsbay has failed to build on her bumper and novice hurdle wins, it might pay to give her another chance in the Sportsman Out Today Handicap Hurdle at Towcester today.

Hugh Morrison's mare has been found wanting at the business end of her races and the trainer has decided to try her in cheekpieces for the first time in the hope that it will have the desired effect.

She looks a chasing type, but didn't cut much ice on her two attempts over fences this winter and she was quickly brought back to hurdling and, though she has made the frame in three of her four runs since, further success has eluded her.

The last time we saw her in action she was fourth to Carew Lad at Chepstow, finishing half a length behind Passenger Omar despite meeting her rival on 13lb better terms for the two and a half lengths that separated them at Warwick on New Year's Eve.

After losing her form completely at the start of the campaign and looking regressive, she took a step back in the right direction at Warwick in December when chasing home Kings Rock and will go on my black list if she doesn't get involved in the shake-up here.

Ferdy Murphy sends Kitski down from Wensleydale for the Sportsman Out Today Beginners' Chase and, though his jumping hasn't set the racing world alight so far, it's such a poor contest that he has to be a leading contender.

He didn't jump well when pulled up at Hereford on his latest start, but he was much better on his previous run at Market Rasen, though no match for Pass Me By.

While it has been a bit of hit and miss with his jumping he is not one to write off just yet and he will find few easier openings than this.

The consistent Unjust Law blotted his copybook at Bangor last month even though he finished second to Call Oscar who had put up a couple of solid performances over timber. …
