A quirky photographic exhibition of people and their pets is on show at South Shields Museum & Art Gallery.

The exhibition explores the bond between us and the animals we call pets.

Fifty-six beautifully studied portraits feature people with the extraordinary catalogue of species commonly kept as companions, from the usual furry, four-legged creatures to the more unusual including spiders and snails.

Photographer Sue Packer is fascinated by the dedication and enthusiasm people show for their pets.

Her images are not sentimental but capture the particular and often peculiar relationships between owner and animal. These images burst with the extraordinary characters and animals she has met.

Sue said: "Pets don't worry if you have a face like a bucket of slugs, or the morning breath of a donkey. Not many marriages last the test of time but an animal friendship goes on forever."

It is not a pretty face or animal she searches for but an edge, something different and touching. …
