Steve McLaren last night prepared for further fixture chaos by admitting: "I didn't want a replay but I'll take it."

The Boro boss stressed that the main thing was to stay in the FA Cup and last night's 0-0 at Charlton assures Boro of a place in the semi-final draw.

McLaren said: "Before the game I hoped we would settle it one way or the other but both sides were well matched and it was a hard fought 0-0.

"The fact we stayed in the competition shows we are successful in cup competitions, we know what it takes to stick in there.

"We knew it would be tough going to Charlton and we started off well but we couldn't sustain it." Charlton dominated for most of the first half and it was Boro's defending that ensured they stayed in game before the interval. McLaren was quick to praise his defenders.

He said: "I thought our two centre backs, Ehiogu and Southgate, were outstanding and the goalkeeper's saves prevented us from falling behind. …
