They've delivered the Sage concert hall, Baltic art gallery and Millennium Bridge to their waterfront already.

But the visionaries of Gateshead Council are still not happy. And quite right they are too.

For now they want a world class developer who's imaginative, innovative and bold enough to complete the riverside's transformation.

But whoever takes on the job had best beware: they'll most certainly need all three qualities in abundance if they're going to match council leader Mick Henry's expectations.

In his eyes, the town's waterfront is now one of the most dramatic and recognisable landscapes in Europe, which is why he's demanding superb design and quality.

That's what the people of Gateshead and beyond will want too, although they'll also share the expectation that the new development will complement, rather than challenge, the existing trio of stunning structures.

The ultimate icon, the Tyne Bridge, stands above them all, of course, radiating a powerful beauty as capable of captivating fleeting observers as it was on the day it opened 77 years ago. …
