Boeta Dippenaar's unbeaten century helped South Africa get their VB Series challenge back on track with a rare win over Sri Lanka via a tight finish in Adelaide.

Dippenaar, unbeaten on 125, scored almost half his side's total as South Africa set Sri Lanka a victory target of 264 in the triangular series.

Sri Lanka, who had won their last six meetings with the Proteas, looked favourites to record another triumph as they progressed to 224 for four with almost six overs left.

But South Africa held their nerve to limit the Sri Lankans to 254 for eight from their allotted 50 overs, earning Graeme Smith's side victory by nine runs.

The star of the match was Dippenaar, although Sri Lanka spin king Muttiah Muralitharan reached 400 one-day international wickets ( picking up two for 45 from his 10 overs.

Murali's first victim was Smith, stumped after contributing 28 to an opening stand of 72 with Dippenaar.

Murali then immediately reached the 400 milestone by having Johan van der Wath caught by Russel Arnold with his next delivery. …
