FOR a woman to play a man in a film is one thing. But for a woman to play a man who wants to be a woman is quite another. And I don't know how you could possibly ask for a better performance from Felicity Huffman as Bree, the LA transsexual in Duncan Tucker's film.

She didn't get the best actress Oscar but, if she had, I would not have complained.

The film has this poor man harried by the medical authorities and by his psychiatrist, as they often are in real life. If you want to become a "real" woman by having the operation, you have to do exactly what they say, and it often takes years. In this case, having discovered he has a son as the result of a clumsy sexual encounter much earlier in his life, he foolishly tells these therapy bullies and they refuse the operation until he has done the decent thing by the boy. …
