The summer festival season looks a bit different this year. The South Bank's Meltdown is cancelled while the Festival Hall gets a makeover, and Glastonbury is having a year off for the refurbishment of Michael Eavis's ravaged fields. New additions such as HiFi and Hyde Park Calling, and blasts from the past such as Monsters of Rock, all add up to a year when there'll be so much outdoor music, you'll be too busy pitching yet another tent to mind Glasto's glaring absence.

HiFi-SOUTH 27-28 May, Matterley Bowl, Winchester Who's it for? Clubbers with no intention of using that tent.

Big draws Live acts Hard-Fi, Ian Brown and Super Furry Animals, but mainly DJs such as Sasha, Paul Oakenfold and Soulwax.

It's already sold out, but the [pounds sterling]85 weekend camping tickets are to be found for a wallet-busting [pounds sterling]200 plus on a trawl through the internet - just watch who you're sending your money to. DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL 9-11 June, Donington Park, Leicestershire Who's it for? Lifelong rockers and their black-clad children.

Big draws? Metallica, Tool and the longawaited live return of Guns N' Roses.
