A Leading Light Who Has Come Full Circle

The Lighthouse Family flicked their `off' switch in 2003a but the future has a hazy glow for at least one half of the band and his new partner in tunes. Sam Wonfor has an exclusive preview.

"As one light flickers, another begins to shine". So the (slightly-modified) door metaphor saying goes.

And its sentiment couldn't be better demonstrated than by the tuneful return of Paul Tucker ( aka one half of the Newcastle-born Lighthouse Family ( to the music-making arena.

Truth be told, Paul's new venture, a collaboration with Spiritualized guitarist Jason Hart, which they're calling The Orange Lights, was actually conceived as the lights went out on The Lighthouse Family in 2003.

The band, who introduced themselves in 1995 with the positive vibes of Lifted, then produced three multi-million-selling albums in the next eight years (four if you include the greatest hits collection) had apparently run their course.

"That had been a pretty full-on gig from 1995 until that time," explains Paul, as he and Jason settle down within the confines of Paul's purpose-built recording studio, The Beach, in Newcastle, to bring me up to speed.

"When I started doing it, everything about it was new and exciting. But I had got to the stage where I couldn't really keep it fresh.

"I'm proud of what we did with Lighthouse Family. A lot of those songs, I love them.

"It just wasn't particularly satisfying any more and I found I had less and less time to do the things that I really wanted to do, like being in here and writing songs."

So, driven by a desire to return to the studio he had built in 1999 in his adopted home city ( where Paul and fellow Lighthouse Family member, Tunde Baiyewu met while at university ( and a need to recapture the excitement and energy which had so far fuelled his success, Paul contacted Jay (as he calls him) after hearing what he could do. …
