This year's Teesside-based National Premier Tennis Finals have been declared the best ever by the tournament organisers.

Boro boss Steve McClaren was among the knowledgeable tennis fans who popped along to the David Lloyd centre in Thornaby to watch some of Britain's top players in action.

"It was the fourth year in a row that we hosted the finals at David Lloyd Teesside and the standard of play was without doubt our best to date," said tournament organiser Mike Dixon.

"We had the likes of British doubles No.1 James Auckland in action, along with French Davis Cup player Jean-Francois Bachelot.

"They were all very impressed and said the only tournaments to surpass it in England are Wimbeldon and Queen's Club, so the word is really spreading. We also attracted some good crowds, including Boro manager Steve McClaren. He stayed the whole day on the Saturday and told me he really enjoyed it."

Hallamshire Sheffield lived up to their top seed status with a thumping win in the event. …
