More for the Floor; Design Your Own Carpet or Have a Favourite Picture Turned into a Rug. Katie Law Gets Fancy with Floors

THEY just aren't what they used to be, carpets. Gone are the days of boring wall-to-wall pile. Thanks to a new generation of carpet designers and makers you can now put whatever you like on your floor, in whatever shade you fancy, with customised colours and contrasting borders, and even turn your favourite painting into a rug, or design your own carpet from scratch.

All done on a laptop

John Lewis has one of the best high-street carpet services. Customers choose a carpet instore, then someone comes to measure your room layout, before entering all the details into a laptop. The computer works out and prints an estimate on the spot and you can order there and then if you wish. Fitting can usually be done in about two weeks. The firm can also remove and dispose of the old before fitting the new (add [pounds sterling]3.55 a square metre).

John Lewis also uses a firm that can create a range of patterned borders for plain carpets.

You choose from a pattern book and the borders are added to the carpet before fitting.

Other services include coloured trims in leather, suede or other fabric of your choice, and a dyeing service.

John Lewis, 100 Oxford Street, W1 (Monday to Saturday, 9.30am to 7pm, or 8pm Thursday, Sunday, noon to 6pm). Call 020 7629 7711, or visit www.johnlewis.com for other stores.

Surfing for carpets

If you can't, or don't want to trudge around showrooms, CarpetRight, which has branches all over London, will send a man in a van with more than 1,200 carpet samples to your home.

If you have had a flood and want to replace a ruined patch of carpet with something that will match your remaining flooring, the firm can do it without you having to leave your home. Other services include removing old carpet, trimming doors and moving furniture before a new carpet is laid. Out-of-hours appointments can also be arranged. Expect to pay from [pounds sterling]3.99 to [pounds sterling]60 a square metre for its carpets. Appointments are usually made within 24 hours of your call and fitting starts in about two weeks.

Call 0845 600 4123, or visit www.carpetright.co.uk to arrange an appointment or to locate your nearest store using your postcode.

'We keep going all night'

"We can lay a single piece of wool carpet up to 40ft wide and any length you like, even if it means getting it into your house using a crane," says Jerry Whelan of north-London carpet store Interfurnish.

Whelan, who has worked in the business for nearly 50 years, also says his team will work through the night if necessary to get the job finished. Home visits and quotes are free.

Interfurnish, 77 Haverstock Hill, NW3.

(Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm; Saturday, 10am to 4pm. Call 020 7722 2621, or visit www.interfurnish.co.uk).
