I am writing in response to your article about Cliff Spedding and the recent alleged cruelty. My wife and I find this very hard to believe.

We came to meet Mr Spedding by accident when we came across a dog in police hands which had been dumped on the A174 early last year.

We stopped to see if we could help and the police handed the dog over to us to try and find a sanctuary.

We rang the RSPCA who would not help and we contacted all the other dog rescue centres we had dealt with and nobody could help.

We were given Cliff's number by Redcar vets. He was the only one who was willing to help and told us to bring the dog to him. It has since been rehomed by him.

We ourselves took a Doberman rescue from Cliff's sanctuary, HOPE, last June, who had been rescued from being put to sleep.

I think Cliff does very well with the limited means he has and we admire his courage as it can at times be heartbreaking.
