We've always suspected it ( but now it's official, Newcastle is one of best places to live in Britain.

A study has put the Toon among the country's top six cities and it is well on the way to becoming a national centre for learning, culture and tourism.

And Geordies are proud of their city, and the most welcoming people in the world, the report says.

The Ideopolis report, published today, praises Newcastle and Gateshead for efforts in pulling the area out of its industrial past and bringing more culture to the region.

But it says communities in the city are split into the "haves" and "have-nots", with less wealthy families left behind by the focus on centres like the Sage and Baltic.

The report, by the work foundation, looked at UK cities and how advanced they are in terms of skills of workers and education.

It identifies London and Edinburgh as Britain's only Ideopolises, cities that have grown rapidly with a large number of people in high-knowledge jobs such as healthcare or teaching. …
