Slim jim baxter was legendary, both on the field of combat and in the hostelries of the world, and fellow Scot Dave Hilley became his best pal during an epic season they spent together at Nottingham Forest.

"The Forest chairman Tony Wood was desperate for a big personality player and spent pounds 100,000 of his own money on Baxter," smiled Hilley.

"There was no way Johnny Carey, our manager, would have signed him.

"Jim got a pounds 4,000 signing on fee for one year, top wages, and was put in a luxury hotel outside the ground while I was in a boarding house.

"When Baxter found out he went in to the club and told them to move me into his hotel and they did too.

"Being two Jocks we became best mates. Jim was a party animal.

"He drank like a fish, often double doubles of Bacardi and coke, and could turn a bit fiery shall we say. In training the next day our coach Tommy Cavanagh could always smell drink on Jim's breath. …
